Every once in a blue moon I will come across a book or tool having such an impact on my life that I have this urge to shout to the world about it. The 4-Hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss is one of those things that can totally change your outlook in life. I read the 1st version way back in 2007 and even if it had already made a huge impact on me, I didn't apply anything out of the book. When the updated and revised version of the book was released just last December, I know I am ready to put it into action!
"Is it possible to go from where you're at to a four hour workweek, and if so how?", this is the fundamental premise of both versions of The 4-Hour Workweek. To answer this question, the author takes you through a 4 step process…
1. Definition - You have got to know where you stand before you can actually know where you are going, but before that, you have to shatter some of your existing false beliefs about where you are now at and just what is achievable for your life.
2. Elimination - How to take your productivity through the roof by removing low priority time wasters that have no impact on your goals, in this section Tim Ferriss takes the notion of time management and turns it upside down.
3. Automation - In my opinion, this is where the book gets really interesting. It is also the portion that had influenced the most astounding changes in my life. In this section Tim details how to outsource and automate not just your income generation, but also those routine unimportant tasks. If you are or want to be a business owner, he brings you through the course of action of finding, testing and automating a "muse", or automated income.
4. Liberation - How to continue your job or business on 4 hours a week, then what to do with the 36 hours extra you used to spend working.
Having read both the original and now the updated version of The 4-Hour Workweek, there are some standout concepts I call game changers which have really stuck with me.
The greatest such game changing concept is outsourcing. Manage your inbox. You no longer have to despise researching, writing and proofing reports, emails and web content. Manage your calendar, right down to scheduling and confirming appointments. Do your shopping. Pay your bills. How would you like to eliminate tiresome market, financial and legal research? Never again spend time on repetitive database and spreadsheet crunching. These are only some of the things you can outsource.
Who knew that outsourcing was something that the regular person could do? Of course big corporations outsource, but you… and me? I had loved the concept when I read the original version but I did not implement it in my life until I read the revised version. One thing I can tell you from experience is that it will be an absolute pain in the ass at the beginning, but it gets easier and in the end is so very well worth it!
The most lasting impact I have from the book is a new ability to think and approach life in a different approach. He has a very myth busting contrarian mind-set that is contagious. On some topics I would at first think and conclude that he was full of it then as I continue to delve into his book, his ideas became more believable. Here are just a few examples…
How to increase personal productivity between 100% and 500%
How to read 200% faster in ten minutes
How to accomplish (or double) profitability in 3 months
One of the nicest parts of the updated version is the wide-ranging list of case studies from readers of the first book that have been able to implement the 4-Hour Workweek. The ideas you get from these case studies are worth the price of the book by themselves.
There is no other book that has much influence and effect in my life like The 4-Hour Workweek. This book will force you to rethink so many things you have thought to be non-negotiables. In so many ways this book is a painful read because it will expose you for the time wasting, tail chasing and old fashioned thinker that you are. The most excellent part of this book is that it cuts to the chase on everything. Tim is not one to mince or waste words. Expect to both like and to hate this book. After reading this book, you can never go back.
