Hemorrhoid Banding: Treatments and Complications

By: Walter Kopal, Posted on: 2010-02-02

Piles are swollen and inflamed blood vessels in the anus and lower rectum. Hemorrhoid banding is a procedure to remove them.
Banding is used to handle painful, bulged Piles. The procedure is more frequently conducted for the stated reasons:
Profusely bleeding Piles
Intensely painful Piles
Hemorrhoid containing a blood clot (called thrombosed hemorrhoid)
Hemorrhoids that come-out through the anus (called prolapsed hemorrhoids)
After-effects are lesser but no clinical procedure is thoroughly free of adverse effects. If you are thinking about opting Banding Hemorrhoids or hemorrhoid banding, your doctor will review a list of possible side-effects which may include:
Infection
Bleeding
Re-aapearance of Hemorrhoids
Swelling and pain from remaining Hemorrhoids
Adverse reaction to the local anesthetic (if used)
An anoscope will be introducedvia the anus. The doctor, will look through the tube inside the rectum and identify the hemorrhoid. The doctor will then use a special banding tool. The tool will place a small rubber band around the hemorrhoid. The band cuts off the blood supply. This will make the hemorrhoid fall off. More than one hemorrhoid may be banded and both the band and the hemorrhoid will fall off in about 1-2 weeks. This is a relatively swift procedure. The length of time depends on how many Piles need treatment. Patients often complain some issues during and after this method. If you feel pricking or intense pain, tell the doctor right away. Manageable pain medicine will help you manage discomfort during recovery.
Post-procedure Care
For a few days, you may have difficulty controlling passage of gas and bowel movements. When you come back home after the procedure, do the mentioned steps to help ensure a easy recovery:
Take sitz baths as advised. Sitz baths will help ease discomfort and clean the location. For a sitz bath, sit in warm water for 10-15 minutes. Pat the area dry. Do not wipe hard or rub roughly. You may be advised to take a sitz bath every four hours and after every bowel movement. Devices are available to place on top of the toilet to make this process comfortable.
Move your bowels immediately when you feel the urge.
Do not stress, bear down, or hold your breath during a bowel movement.
Do not sit on the toilet for long duration of time.
To prevent constipation and straining during bowel movements: use a stool softener, exercise, drink plenty of fluids, and eat plenty of high-fiber foods ( fruits, vegetables , beans, and whole grain )
Apply creams or ointments as advised by your doctor.
Avoid weight lifting for two or three weeks.
Meke sure you follow your doctor's instructions .
Expect some bleeding when the hemorrhoid falls off. See your doctor for a follow-up 3-4 weeks after the procedure.
After arriving home, contact your doctor if any of the following occurs:
Passing profuse amounts of blood
Signs of infection, including fever and chills
Pain that you can't control with the medications you've been given
Constipation or trouble urinating
An pain-like feeling develops in the area between the rectum and the genitals
If you go as far as to have three or four Hemorrhoids banding treatments and your Piles do not go away, it may be time to think about a hemorrhoidectomy. This procedure involves surgery to permanently remove the Hemorrhoids. The downfall is that surgery is more complicated and costlier than Hemorrhoids banding, needs a longer recovery period, and has a longer list of side-effects.
