SEO: The 5 Most Important On-Page Factors To Rank High In Search Engines.

By: Alex Dubois, Posted on: 2010-01-24

hen optimising a site for it to achieve high organic (natural) rankings, the work is divided
in two parts :

1 - THE ON PAGE optimisation : All the modifications made to the site's source code, like finding the
most relevant keywords, naming the images with our primary targetted keywords etc....

2 - THE OFF PAGE optimisation : Very popular today, it is all the work done on other site's than
the one we are working on, to make it popular (develop its "link popularity" semms to be the main priority today
when doing off-page optimisation).

It is said all over the internet that combination of those 2 different processes will determine all the website's ranking positions and
some say that the ratio of importance is 60% for the off-site and 40% for the on-site part.

I personally think that by optimising perfectly the following 5 on-page factors,
it is possible to rank on the first page of Google for the targetted word/phrase without having over 100 average quality backlinks to your site.

1 : THE TITLE TAG
The most important factor in SEO. Period.
This tag will help you rank high for your targeted keyword if optimized correctly.
It should contain 80 caracters at the most, you should place your primary keyword at its beggining and it
should be unique on each page of your site (very important).

2: THE KEYWORD DENSITY
To achieve high rankings, a page should contain the optimal keyword density which is of course a secret well kept by
"the giants" (Google, Yahoo etc...) but all experts estimate it between 2 and 5 % (which means that your keyword
should represent 2 to 5 % of the total of words present on the page).
Avoid keyword stuffing like buy camera, cheap camera, discout camera anywhere on the page or you will be penalised for that.

3: HIDDEN TAGS (not visible to the visitor) in the source code.
Every image present on the page shall be named using the alt tags because search engines can't
tell what is an image about (yet!) so naming it with your keywords is one more step to the top.
Alse use the "title" attribute for your links which can add some relevance to your page.
In both methods keep the occurence reasonnable and don't stuff your alt and title tags only with keywords.

4 : THE H1, H2, H3 TAGS
Very important tags that have to be used in order to be in the top results (at least the H1 tag).
They are a way to give more importance to a phrase. We could compare them to the chapters title
in a book.

5 : THE CONTENT
A page without content will not rank high. Try to organise your content in categories and prefer using
text over images to link the pages.

If you follow those simple rules, don't try to trick the engines and stuff your pages with keywords, you should
rank very high without more than 100 backlinks ! YES ! I own a site that has exactly 250 backlinks
but is optimised and it has 1st and 2nd page rankings on my choosen keywords. It ranks way higher than most of my competitors
having thousands of backlinks ! Period !
I think today, we hear way too much about SEO = backlink everywhere and everyone seem to have forgot ON-PAGE optimisation.
If you have thousands of backlinks and a site not optimised : you will not rank high, but on the other hand, a site with very few
backlinks but optimised correctly will rank high, and sometimes higher than you could think.0
